Helpful Baking Tips

🌀
Fan Oven Rule
Fan ovens cook ~20°C hotter. Reduce temperature or shorten cooking time by 10–15 mins.
🌡️
Preheat Always
Preheat for 10–15 minutes. A cold oven gives uneven results, especially for bread and cakes.
📍
Oven Position
Middle rack is ideal for even heat. Top rack browns faster; bottom rack suits pastry bases.
🌡️
Check Accuracy
Oven thermostats can be off by 10–25°C. Use an oven thermometer to verify true temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit for ovens?
To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 (or 1.8) then add 32. For example, 180°C × 1.8 = 324, then +32 = 356°F. Our tool does this automatically — just type in the temperature and select °C.
Gas Mark is a temperature scale used on gas ovens, predominantly in the UK and Ireland. It runs from Gas Mark ¼ (very cool, ~110°C) to Gas Mark 10 (extremely hot, ~260°C). Most baking recipes use Gas Mark 4–6 (180–200°C).
A moderate oven is typically 180°C (350°F / Gas Mark 4). It is the most common baking temperature — ideal for cakes, cookies, and casseroles. A moderately hot oven is 190°C (375°F / Gas Mark 5).
Fan (convection) ovens circulate hot air, making them roughly 15–20°C hotter than conventional ovens. As a general rule, reduce any recipe temperature by 20°C when using a fan oven, or reduce cooking time by about 10 minutes.
200°C is equal to 392°F and Gas Mark 6. This is considered a “hot” oven, suitable for roasting vegetables, pizza, and crusty breads. In a fan oven, use 180°C.
